Abandon by Meg Cabot: Review

Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.

Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away... especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

I received this as a RAK from Aislynn. I am so grateful for her, because this book was freaking fantastic!

The Bad
The Flashbacks. Okay, there was only one thing I did not like with this book. At first, the random flashbacks kinda threw me off. Pierce would be doing something, and the next thing you know, she's back in the past. Don't worry though, the confusion only lasted in the first few chapters as I tried to settle into the story. Later on, it didn't bother me anymore, and I actually was able to appreciate it.

The Good
The Flashbacks. Yes, I know I placed it under The Bad as well. However, like I said, I actually liked the flashbacks later on. It was like Cabot was revealing secrets bit by bit, and I kinda liked the effect of her plot. The readers are kept in the dark about Pierce's past, but the mystery slowly unravels as you go through it.

The Awesome
Everything Else. I loved this book. The twist in the mythology was fantastic, and the mystery was intriguing, and the ending punched me in the gut. I love Pierce and John's love-hate relationship. I love how Cabot wrote the book from Pierce's perspective; I could really connect with her. Plus the bad guy? I never would have guessed who it was. Brilliant idea, Meg! I love this book, period.

The Rating
Is there really any doubt that I would give this book any less than 5 stars? I adored this book. I devoured it as soon as I could. I am a HUGE Cabot fan (and I have the bookshelf to prove it!)- she was my first favorite YA author- so I had totally high expectations for this book.

She surpassed them.

There's just no saying in words how much I loved this book. Totally recommended for fans of paranormal romance. Go pick it up now!!!

Now for some cover love. On the left is the US cover, on the right is the UK one. They're both amazing, don't you think? :)

And what's this? It's Underworld, the second book in the trilogy! I am so excited, since Abandon ended in a super cliffie. If ARCs will be available, I will do ANYTHING to get one.

I kid you not.

Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn’t dead.

Not this time.

But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.

Her captor, John Hayden, claims it’s for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they’ve come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.

But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.

And unless Pierce is careful, this time there’ll be no escape.

I'll try to wait patiently now. *snorts* (As if!)
